PEDIGREE PERPLEXITY

MAIN POINT
In the second chapter of the book of James, we are warned against giving special attention and "good seats" to rich people while asking the poor among us to stand or sit on the floor. This script uses the animal world of purebreds, pedigrees and mutts to illustrate this point. However, a second parallel point is raised along this same line. People (and animals) who realize where they came from and where they would be without being rescued tend to be more grateful and accepting of the life they have been given.

CHARACTERIZATION
Suzanne is a well-dressed, well-groomed woman who adores her purebred cat. Image is everything to her. She is outspoken and very obviously prejudiced. Ed is an average working man who prides himself on his tough dog, Bruiser. He spent a lot of money on a purebred dog and likes to tell people about it. Somehow Ed is a tougher, better person (in his eyes) because of his dog. Kay is casually dressed in jeans, a bandana on her head and sunglasses to keep her from being noticed. She was elected judge of the common pleas court 2 years ago. She herself was adopted by loving parents and rescued by Christ, and she works hard to make life better for others. She has a good sense of humor and is an animal lover. The receptionist is a pretty straightforward role. It can be played by a male or female wearing a medical smock.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES
1) Place Suzanne and Kay side by side and facing Ed. The audience gets a side view with two actors on their left and one on their right. Receptionist enters from upstage.

2) If you use a live dog for Dixie, make sure she's very laid-back. You don't want to complicate things unnecessarily.

RELATED SCRIPTURES
This script is based on James 2:1-5 where the writer warns us against showing favoritism to the rich and elite. Also try Romans 3:23-27 where we are reminded that we cannot boast about our acceptance in God's eyes. Our rich inheritance comes solely by what Christ did for us ... not fame, fortune, good works or pedigree. See also God's description of Israel in Ezekiel 16.

RELATED THEMES
Use this sketch to introduce the idea of elitism and spiritual pride or rescue and the gratitude that naturally follows.
