ADOPTED

MAIN POINT
Unconditional love is a hard subject to grasp. We are distrustful of grandiose promises. Things that seem too good to be true usually are. Most human relationship has failed at one point or another.

So to hear of God’s unfailing love can arouse both great hope and skepticism — hope that it could be true, fear that it isn’t. The passage on which this sketch is based talks about being adopted into God’s family — no longer as slaves, but as children.

Just as Alison has a hard time understanding acceptance without performance, so many Christians still live in fear — hoping they haven’t crossed the line, hoping they won’t be kicked out of the family.

CHARACTERIZATION
Dad — Since Dad is representing God’s unconditional love, we’ve portrayed him as perfect as a father can be in such a situation. Play him as approachable and down-to-earth. His lines elaborate his character.

Alison — She’s had a hard life. As a result, she’s a bit on the tough side — slightly tomboyish. She’s determined and a fierce competitor, but still soft underneath.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES
1) Take your time with the visual introduction. It will arouse the curiosity of the audience and help them understand her later.

2) At some point Dad should put his arm around Alison to comfort her.

3) Make sure there’s good eye contact between them at the crucial conclusion.

4) This is a heart-jerker. Overlapping the end with one of our suggested songs would really drive things home.

RELATED SCRIPTURES
The doctrine of God’s adoption is expounded in Romans 8 and 9,  2 Corinthians 6:17-18, 1 John 3, Hosea 2:23, and Ephesians 1:5 ff.

RELATED THEMES
Although the primary connection is with unconditional love and God’s grace, some churches could use this in a parenting class or an environment with teens and parents together.
